Twilight running

Now that the days are shorter, there is often no option but to run in the dark. I try to avoid it and most weeks can go without ever running in the evening, however sometimes you just have to get out there when you can.

It often surprises me that although I have been awake all day, I run better at night. My shadow cast by the street lights is more upright, has better form. Everything sounds and looks different at night. I run the same route but the landmarks change. The trees disappear, and lamp posts appear that were invisible in the day. On the quiet residential roads you can hear leaves and you see them without even looking up. They make shadows on the pavement.

I tire easily during day time runs of the same distance on the same route. Perhaps because there is something endless about the night that relaxes you.

I would never run in to the park at night, for safety issues. However even the roads can be a hazard if you are not visible. So be visible at all times.

At night I don't think like I do in the day. My mind isn't full of lists of things that I have to do, didn't do and couldn't do. There are no fantasies about K's future. At night I don't like running to music with lots of beats. At night I feel truly alone. I just run.

Anyway, I want to cut down on running and take up a more winter friendly hobby. As much as I love running in the cold, ice and the dark are not the best combination.

I am going to make the most of the milder nights this week.
